At #COP29Baku, #COMSATS, in collaboration with #ICESCO, Islamic Organization for Food Security, #ICARDA, Food Security & Agriculture Center of Excellence (#FACE), and #LivingIndus, hosted an insightful panel discussion on "Integrating Permaculture & Predictive Modeling for Climate-Resilient Agriculture." 🌾 Moderated by Faraz Ahmed Toor (fztoor), the session showcased the significant role of Living Indus, with Humaira Jahanzeb (@humaira_jahanzeb) presenting its vision and initiatives, and Faisal Syed (@faisal.syed5) contributing as a key panelist. The event highlighted critical themes of water security, nature-based solutions, technology integration, and the necessity for robust policies and governance to achieve climate-resilient agriculture. Amb. Dr. Mohammad Nafees Zakaria, ED of #COMSATS, emphasized the centrality of biodiversity in permaculture to improve soil health, enhance ecosystem resilience, and sustain productivity. It was an insightful experience attending the ILO stakeholder session in Karachi, focusing on the Impact of Climate Change on Decent Work. We are collaborating with key sectors, like the textile industry, through the ESCM project to update Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) standards, especially in response to excessive heat and chemical management. A key priority discussed was addressing Industrial Effluents, where businesses must ensure that chemical waste does not harm surrounding communities and biodiversity. Grateful to Hira Tariq from Aga Khan University for sharing critical research on occupational safety and climate change, and thankful to the @debaaj_abidi, ILO for the platform to present the Living Indus Initiative and its alignment with addressing the challenges of industrial effluents. #LivingIndus #ClimateAction #SustainableWorkplaces #OSH fztoor

A proposed 'Indus Protection Act' could change this, granting legal rights to the rivers, forests, and biodiversity of the basin. The Adaptation Board has approved the $10 million SAFER project, led by the Ministry of Climate Change & Environmental Coordination and ICIMOD as the regional scientific partner! With UNICEF and UN Women executing, this project will focus on nature-based solutions like springs, groundwater recharge, ecosystem-based wetlands, and wastewater treatment—especially addressing the needs of vulnerable groups like children and women.
